Our Take

Telling the story of the amazing Tommy Thompson's search for and eventual recovery of the richest shipwreck in history, this book is just plain a great read. Just as Thompson's search was inspired by history and science as well as treasure hunting (a moniker he despises), Gary Kinder's book is half history, half narrative and all interesting. Between Thompson's research and recovery, enough material was amassed to paint an intimate, detailed picture of a period in the adolescence of our nation the likes of which we've not seen before. The story and science of the recovery are spellbinding on their own; it's a tough call which is cooler - the historical goldmine in the tragic story of the sinking of the Central America or the real gold recovered through science, engineering and sheer balls. Very fun read.
