Our Take

The modern Western world is so free of epidemics, no one gives much time to their study. But anyone who has read the seminal work on the topic of disease and history (Rats, Lice, and History) will drop whatever they're doing to read more on the topic. Pox Americana is one of these books. The smallpox epidemic of 1775-82 and its effect on the up-and-coming Americans is rescued from the footnotes where it has lingered for so many years. Adding in perhaps incalculable ways to the chaos of the Revolution, the smallpox virus may well have spurred the creation of a nation. And then the destruction of another: the nihlistic effects of the disease on the Native American population are presented in just as great detail. A must read.
