Our Take

Dr. Nirenberg is a professor of ours here at Rice University, and the reason why hundreds of students care at all about history. This book talks about violence against minorities in the Middle Ages, dismissing the simple view that "attacks were often perpretrated by irrational masses laboring under inherited ideologies and prejudices." Crediting our medieval cousins with more intelligence, he speaks of persecution as part of the functioning of a normal society. Astounding scholarship combine with attention to often hilarious details for an engrossing and utterly educational read.
