Our Take

H.M. Scott presents a convincing historiography of the diplomatic fortunes of the "Great Powers" in the last eighteenth century. Any student of European or American history will recognize that the manner in which these powers (England, France, Austria, Prussia, Russia) interacted and formed is of ultimate importance to understanding the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Without the influence of a Germany united under Prussia or a Russia strong enough to threaten France's continental hegemony, the calculus of power would be quite different indeed. How did Prussia, a formerly backwater agricultural nation, form the seed that would grow into the mighty Third Reich? And what of Russia, a despotic kingdom too large to govern? In brief, the Seven Years' war (not the Napoleonic wars, as are often cited) and strong leadership. But read the book for a study of breathtaking detail. Excellent to gain an understanding of the profound impact the imperial struggle of the last half of the 18th century would have on all of Europe's nations; a great complement to readings on revolutionary America.
