Our Take

An ex-priest who grew up as an air force child during Vietnam would be expected to have quite a bit to say about the Catholic Church and its treatment of Jews. James Carroll does not disappoint, and indeed his literary skills are impressive. History House is not compelled by his rehash of some old ground that seeks to draw an unerringly straight line from Christ to the Holocaust as if it were an inevitability. But we really like what is effectively a history of the Jews through Catholic eyes. Understanding the important topic of anti-Semitism requires theology, not just history, and Carrol does not disappoint.
