Our Take
The failed Communist experiment of the 20th century was followed by another audacious experiment: the attempt to create market economies from scratch while preserving national stability. Timothy Garton Ash is an example of how good journalists can become good historians. His eye-witness accounts are sharp and observational. The dramatic upheavals in Eastern Europe, while not unqualified success, have been peaceful and produced real progress. For this reason they have often remained under the radar. The lessons in 'nation building', economics, and political science are invaluable. Only time will tell if the experiment has succeeded -- but this book helps document some of the way.
