Our Take

The author's talent for narrative that is both concise and compelling is evident from the beginning of this account of quinine's long history. Peopled by men both great and foolish, the tale of the search for a treatment for malaria and attempts to bring it under European control contains all the elements of a classic adventure story: smugglers, international intrigue, battles won and lost, great hardships and great rewards. Honigsbaum brings this adventure to life while maintaining rigid standards of research and attention to detail. He has also given us a keen example of the intersection of society and medicine by exploring the economic incentives of bringing quinine back to the old world and the military consequences of not doing so. This book is simply not to be missed. (Check out an excerpt here.)
